Description

The 99-year-old filmmaker, Kaneto Shindo's latest work "Postcard (Ichimai no Hagaki)" comes out on DVD. Shindo has often made films dealing with war such as "Children of Hiroshima," "The Naked Island," "Onibaba," "Kuroneko," and "A Last Note." The story focuses on the wrenching tale of an impoverished Japanese woman whose entire family is killed, in the waning days of World War II. The film was partially inspired by Shindo's own experience during W.W.II, in which he was one of only six out of his 100-man unit who survived.

日本映画界の至宝、新藤兼人が99年の人生をかけた最後の最高傑作。戦争での実体験をもとに描いた、魂をゆさぶる渾身の一本! 人の命が"クジ"に左右され、兵士の死は残された家族のその後の人生をも破滅に導く、そんな戦争の愚かしさを、新藤兼人は体験者ならではの目線で、時に激しく、時に笑い飛ばすように描いてみせた。――戦争末期に徴集された100名の中年兵は、上官によるクジ引きによってそれぞれ次の戦地が決められた。宝塚に赴任する松山啓太は、フィリピンへ赴任することになった戦友・定造に妻・友子からの一枚のハガキを託される。――今日はお祭りですが あなたがいらっしゃらないので 何の風情もありません――「検閲があり返事が出せない。そして俺は死ぬだろう。お前が生き残ったら、このハガキは読んだと妻に伝えてくれ」と、啓太は定造から依頼された。そして、終戦。100名の内、生き残ったのはたった6名。生き残った啓太はハガキを書いた友子を訪ねる。友子は夫の亡き後、立て続けに家族を失い、古い民家とともに朽ち果てようとしていた。戦後、全てを失った二人が見つけた"再生"への道とは・・・。
