What has happened to Takeshi Kitano in the decade since 'Zatoichi', his great critical and commercial triumph? While in that film he successfully counterbalanced serious, shocking violence with humour and humanity, 'Outrage' offers only unleavened brutality. I note that 'Outrage' opens with the Warner Bros logo -- presumably it is an international co-production, as was another below-par Kitano picture, 2000's 'Brother'. (But 'Brother' benefited from a jazzy Joe Hisaishi score at least.) Although the DVD image is clean and clear, it often succumbs to moire patterning. It is still possible, even in the age of Blu-ray, for standard-definition to impress -- order a DVD made by Mondo Macabro in the States for example, or 'Shining Boy and Little Randy' from this very website. Unfortunately, 'Outrage' does not.

Description

Kato, the lieutenant (Wakagashira) of a huge organized yakuza syndicate Sannokai, which controls the entire Kanto region, is not pleased with the recent close relationship between its umbrella yakuza groups Ikemoto and Murase. He plans to bust up these two yakuza families and orders to Ikemoto to bring the unassociated Murase family in line. However Ikemoto made a pledge of brotherhood with Murase, so they cannot be harmful to Murase. Therefore, Ikemoto passes the task on to its controlled yakuza group Otomo. However. . .
