Best of The Hoople Albums 5

This album marks the end of the Hunter/Ralphs collaboration. It has the band on the cusp of the pure glam pop that was to come and the rock/folk influences that they were leaving behind. The process of transition began with All the Young Dudes, a Bowie influenced album that aside from the hits on that album had Mick Ralphs first airing of his famous Ready for Love song. Hunter bought into the new direction, Ralphs it seems, did not. The Mott album sees the band building on the Bowie era with a fresh, self produced sound. Ralphs emerges with a guitar style reminiscent of Paul Kossof while Hunter presents his signature vocal that was to be the mainstay of the band without Ralphs. The songs are not repetitive pop songs, they are detailed efforts and some reflect the bands circumstances much like Jackson Brownes version of The Load Out. See All The Way From Memphis, and Ballad of Mott the Hoople. There is plenty of solid rock, some quirky songs with some glam influences too. Im a Cadillac reflects a pinnacle of creativity that the band never got to explore further. It is easily their best album and well worth the remastering effort, although I am not a fan of bonus tracks.
