ドキュメンタリー映画『米軍が最も恐れた男 その名は、カメジロー』の2部作で日本映画復興賞、日本映画批評家大賞ドキュメンタリー賞、アメリカ国際フィルム・ビデオフェスティバル・ドキュメンタリー・歴史部門サーティフィケート賞ほか多数受賞するなど、大きな注目を浴びた佐古忠彦監督作品。日本の敗色濃厚だった太平洋戦争末期に戦中最後の沖縄県知事となった島田叡のドキュメンタリー。米軍が迫る中、着任と同時に疎開促進、食料確保など、県民のための様々な施策を断行しつつ、軍部からの理不尽な要求と、行政官としての住民第一主義という信念の板挟みになり、苦悩する。いよいよ米軍が上陸し、地上戦の最中、それまでの「自決・玉砕」という考え方に抗い、周りの人々に「生きろ」と伝え続けた。新たに発見された資料をまじえ、島田を知る人々への取材を通じて、多くを語られていない、島田叡という人物の生涯と語り継ぐべき沖縄戦にせまった長編ドキュメンタリー映画。音楽はカメジローにつづき、兼松衆、中村巴奈重が担当し、島田叡の人生、当時の沖縄の人々の人生。現代に生きる我々の心に迫る実話に寄り添うようなサウンドトラックを収録。 ※主題歌は収録されません
