[EMI Legacy Vinyl Collection Vol.2] "東芝EMI"の隠れた名盤をアナログレコードで振り返るシリーズの第二弾。今回はロック的な要素を感じ取れる5タイトルをリリース! ■リードボーカルの吉田奈邦子の歌声は往年の吉田美奈子を彷彿とさせることもあり、世代を超えた音楽ファンに高く評価されたバンド、フリーボの3作目。キャロル・キングやはっぴいえんどあたりに通じるアーシーな魅力を感じさせるセンスの良いグループ。インディーズでリリースされた1stアルバム『すきまから』 (1996年)は非常に衝撃的で、ニール・ヤングやThe Bandを思わせるダイナミックなフォークロックサウンドもほかにはない斬新なスタイルだった。翌97年にメジャーデビューを果たし、『フリーボ'97』 (1997年)、そして萩原健太を共同プロデューサーに迎えた本作『Smoking Blues』 (1998年)をリリース、以前よりも増してシンプルで骨太なサウンドが大いに反響を呼んだ。その後、『Blue Moon』 (2000年)と素晴らしいアルバムを連発したが、しばらくすると活動休止してしまった。 (オリジナル発売: 1998年)
