One of the first Japanese CDs I bought. I don't usually care much for soundtracks, since they usually contain many very short tracks. Not in this one. Each of the eight tracks is fully developed and works perfectly on it's own. This symphonic suite from "Mononoke Hime" has all the great features of Hisaishi's music; the soft piano melodies accentuated by beautifully delicate strings, grand melodies smoothly transferred between different sections of the orchestra, the dramatic drumbeats and build-up of suspense. These tunes hold a remarkable connection to nature. Try listening to "Ashikata to San" on low volume while in forest and it will blend very nicely with the natural sounds of the woods. I have only two very minor gripes with this album. While some melodies and elements are nicely shared between the songs there is no flow from one track to the next. You can just as well listen to these tracks in any order (some probably prefer it this way). Also the album is only a little over 47 minutes long and there would have been space for an additional song or for nice interludes between the existing songs, so that the theme would have been carried smoothly throughout the album.
