ジミが火をつけたのは、ギターだけじゃなかった! 1967年作品。デビュー作『アー・ユー・エクスペリエンスト?』でロック・シーンに衝撃を与え、ギターに火をつけ破壊するというモンタレー・ポップ・フェスティヴァルでの驚愕のパフォーマンスで、母国アメリカの聴衆も虜にしたジミ・ヘンドリックス。本作は、同じ年に早くも発表されたセカンド・アルバムだ。溢れんばかりの勢いを前面に押し出した前作に比べてインパクトでは劣るかもしれないが、彼の才能の幅広さと奥深さをより感じさせてくれる点ではこちらが上。代表曲のひとつである「リトル・ウィング」は、幻想的で、ロマンティックで、かつブルージー。「イフ・シックス・ワズ・ナイン」では自分の生き方を強く宣言し、「ユー・ガット・ミー・フローティン」ではファンクとロックの融合を実現。また、敬愛するボブ・ディランの影響が窺える楽曲も・・・と、聴きどころはあまりにも多い。「このアルバムが一番好き」と言うファンが多いのもうなずける傑作!
