明治十年西南戦争――日本最後の聖戦に挑んだ男たちがいた。オイどんが戦う意味は、必ずや誰かに届く。企画・榎木孝明が贈る、明治維新の薩摩武士の生涯を描いた時代劇。主演は鹿児島出身で今作の企画者でもある榎木孝明。明治維新の時代に活躍した薩摩武士・桐野利秋 (中村半次郎)の生涯を描いた壮大な時代劇。監督はじめスタッフも強力、『突入せよ! あさま山荘事件』『男たちの大和/YAMATO』『墨攻』など、スペクタクル溢れる撮影・照明の匠、阪本善尚・大久保武志が躍動感ある人間ドラマに仕立て上げた。永山弥一郎役にはEXILEのAKIRAを迎えた。時代劇初挑戦にもかかわらず、殺陣の素晴らしさ、流暢な薩摩弁には目を見張る。半次郎の恋人役には白石美帆が＜体当たり＞の演技に挑戦。その他、津田寛治、坂上忍、雛形あき子、竜雷太などが脇を固め、見応えたっぷりの映画に仕上がった。 幕末の動乱期。薩摩の若き侍たちの中心的存在である西郷吉之助 (田中正次)が京に上ると聞いた中村半次郎 (榎木孝明)は一行に加わることに。上京した半次郎は、人並み外れた度胸の良さと剣の腕などで、たちまち名をとどろかせるようになる。さらに半次郎は、長州藩士の鮎川小次郎 (葛山信吾)や薩摩藩士の永山弥一郎 (AKIRA)と交流を深め、維新の理想を再び胸に抱いていくのだった。
