昭和十七年六月五日に始まったミッドウェー海戦大敗直後の六月二十四日、文部省が前年中止になっていた甲子園大会の開催を知らせる通達を出した。だが、大会の主催者は大阪朝日新聞社ではなく文部省だった。「一片の通牒のほか何等委曲を盡すことなかりし当局の態度に対しては、遺憾を禁ぜざるものがある」(「朝日新聞」七月十二日付社告)。今も朝日新聞社の記録では「昭和十六年～二十年戦争で中止」となっている甲子園大会が、なぜ昭和十七年夏だけ文部省によって開催されたのか?戦意高揚のため特異な戦時ルールが適用され、「選手」としてではなく「選士」として出場し選手交代も認められず、大会後は「兵士」として戦場へ向かった多くの球児たちの数奇な運命を辿る傑作ノンフィクション。
