都新聞の花柳演芸記者を勤め、長唄、清元など演芸全般に通じた粹人平山蘆江は、泉鏡花、喜多村緑郎らと夜な夜な「怪談会」に打ち興じる怪談好きとしても知られた。本書は、蘆江がものした怪談小説十二本に随筆「怪異雑記」の附録つき。「火焔つつじ」など二三の作品がアンソロジーに収録されただけで、令名のみ高く、その全貌を見たものが殆どいなかった幻の怪談集を、昭和九年の初刊以来七十五年振りに復刊。
