現在、国民国家には、批判的再検討が進められている。その批判は、一方でEUなどの国家を越えた広がりを持つ領域からのものであり、他方で国家内もしくは境界地域のある特定の地域からのものである。ただし、おうおうにして広域圏や地域は国民国家と同様な性質を帯びることがあり、これらからの批判が必ずしも有効とは言い切れない。そこで、本書は、ウェールズ、シュタイアーマルク、ヘッセン、バイエルン、ドイツ領ポーランドといった具体的な「地域」を歴史的文脈から分析し、「地域」と国家、さらに帝国の関係、「地域」の政治・文化、マイノリティなどに焦点を当てて、ヨーロッパ近代の捉え直しを試みる。
