作用素環は量子力学の数学的性質を論じるためにvon Neumannによってつくられた数学的概念である。その本質は無限次元線形代数であるが、位相を駆使して無限を調教することで、従来の数学にはない新しい世界が切り拓かれる。本書と先に刊行された『作用素環入門1-関数解析とフォン・ノイマン環』は関連諸分野での現代的な関心も見据えた作用素環の入門書である。本巻では、作用素環のうちでもとりわけ関心の強いC*環について、1巻と独立しても読めるようにまとめてある。C*環の個々の具体例をそれぞれに固有な道具立てとともに紹介することが目標である。本書の最後では、K理論の基礎部分を簡単に紹介し、先に紹介した具体的C*環でK群の計算をおこなう。ここでの議論に親しめば、C*環を用いた非可換複素ベクトル束の記述が自然な数学的対象であることがわかるだろう。
