チョン・ジンソク君は、1年生の3学期に、父親の転勤でソウルから長崎にやってきた韓国の男の子。4年生になったチョン君。「センセイ、ハタアル?」と私に尋ねました。ハタ?…あ、そうか、運動会の万国旗のことだ!運動会の万国旗の中に、自分の国の旗があるか気になっていたのです。運動会の前日、私はチョン君の国の旗を探しました。ない!何回も見直しましたが見つかりません。著者は、本を見ながら、初めて韓国の旗を描きました。当日の早朝、手づくりの旗は若い先生たちの手でしっかり結びつけられました。チョン君が韓国に帰ることになりました。韓国の教科書で勉強するチョン君は、日本のことをどう学ぶのだろうか…。こうして、韓国の小学生が使う歴史教科書を学ぶ取り組みが始まりました。そして、親子でチョン君のいる韓国を訪ね、親子で文集まで作り上げました。チョン君のひとことから始まった「親と子の韓国平和の旅」は、歴史認識を共有するための長い長い旅の第一歩でした。
