劉家の妖物が歌った詩が、李白の「清平調詞」であり、それは時代を遡ること約六〇年前、玄宗皇帝の前で、楊貴妃の美しさを讃えるために歌われたものである-。それを空海に示唆したのは、白居易という役人であった。当時、李白はこれをきっかけに玄宗の寵を得たが、それを妬んだ宦官の高力士の讒言により、のちに長安を追われることとなったという。それを知った空海は、楊貴妃の墓所がある、馬嵬駅に赴く。劉家と綿畑の怪は、安禄山の乱における楊貴妃の悲劇の死に端を発すると看破した空海は、貴妃の墓を暴くことを決意する。墓前で空海は、白居易-のちの大詩人・白楽天と初めて出会う。白は空海に、詩作の悩みを打ち明けるのだった…。
