大宰府跡に関する著作物は多い。書店でも図書館でもよく目にする。しかし、1968(昭和43)年からはじまり半世紀以上に及ぶ計画的な発掘調査の成果を、網羅的かつ客観的にまとめたものは皆無である。なぜなら、それは単に発掘調査に留まらず、(1)長期的な発掘調査で得られた膨大な情報の把握と整理及び関連遺跡との関係性追究、(2)東アジア史・文献史学・歴史地理学・保存科学に関する多様な知識と視点、(3)文化財保護としての意識と観点、こうした多岐にわたる専門分野をバランスよく高度に分析することが不可欠だからである。筆者は大宰府跡の発掘調査に長年携わり、最新の研究成果を九州歴史資料館や九州国立博物館における展示という手法を通して、その都度わかりやすく楽しく披露してきた。この40年に及ぶ取り組みの集大成が本書であり、ついにここに筆者が求める「大宰府復元」が完成したのである。
