石田梅岩(一六八五～一七四四)思想家、儒学者。京都亀岡の百姓として生まれ、商家にて奉公しながら独学で諸学に親しんだ。長じてからは小栗了雲に師事して思索を深め、職を辞し、儒者として身分や性別を問わず広く門戸を開いた。人の「性」を知り、物事の在るべき姿、なすべき義に添った生き方を説き、のち石門心学と呼ばれる独自の思想を打ち立てた。今なお人々の心を動かし続ける市井の思想家の生涯を描く。
