Banach‐Tarskiの逆理とは、「球体を有限個に分解し、剛体運動で動かして組み立てることにより、2倍の大きさにできる」という驚くべき数学的帰結である。本書では、この逆理と、群論・幾何学・数学基礎論との関係に触れる。原著の初版は1985年に発行された。新版では、逆理に関する多数の新しい結果と証明、さらには未解決の問題を掲載している。その中には、Escherの有名な木版画『天使と悪魔』の形に関係している、双曲平面における逆理もある。新しい章(9章)は、60年以上にわたって未解決であった問題「円の正方形化」の完全な証明に充てられている。
