非圧縮性粘性流体の運動は、非線形方程式であるナヴィエ‐ストークス方程式によって記述される。本書は同方程式を数学的に厳密に解くことを主眼とし、そのための基礎理論から丁寧に解説する。上巻では、線形化問題であるストークス方程式について、その初期値・境界値問題に対するLp‐Lq最大正則性原理と連続解析半群の存在を示す。そのために、ストークス作用素に関して著者が切り拓いたR有界性理論を丁寧に解説する。これらを導く方法は、R有界作用素を基盤とするスペクトル解析であり、数理物理に多く現れる未解決な放物型方程式系、双曲型‐放物型方程式系の初期値・境界値問題に応用できる。
