これまで見過ごされてきた1930年前後の「日中戦争前夜」数年間に展開された日中の中国学研究者たちの学術交流について、その実態を検証し、意義を考察する。近年発見された目加田誠の留学記録『北平日記』を手がかりに、中国の古典戯曲小説分野での書誌学的交流(馬廉と倉石武四郎、孫楷第と長澤規矩也)や、『万葉集』・『源氏物語』の訳者銭稲孫が自宅に開設した日本語図書室「泉寿東文書庫」など、北平に咲いた東洋古典学の一斑を明らかにする。
