デカルト ユトレヒト紛争書簡集 / デカルト/〔著〕 山田弘明/訳 持田辰郎/訳 倉田隆/訳
デカルト(1596‐1650)の『方法序説および三試論』(1637)や『省察』(1641)が刊行され、その思想はオランダの諸大学に浸透していった。それら新しい思想を好意的に受け入れる人々が出てきた反面、デカルトの「新哲学」の台頭をこころよく思わない人々もいた。その筆頭ともいうべき、プロテスタントの牧師で、ユトレヒト大学の学長ヴォエティウスは「新哲学」の追放を画策した。その後、新旧思想の対立をめぐり大学、市参事会、アカデミーを巻き込む一連の論争が展開し、それが「ユトレヒト紛争」である。本書には、ユトレヒト紛争の発端となったデカルトによる『ディネ師宛書簡』(1642)と『ヴォエティウス宛書簡』(1643)、そして紛争を総括した『ユトレヒト市参事会宛弁明書簡』(1645)、これらデカルトによる三つの公開書簡と、この紛争にまつわる八つの付属文書を収録する。本書簡群はフランスでもあまり注目されてこなかったが、著作とは違った、論争家としてのデカルトの知られざる側面が垣間見えるとともに、新哲学として登場したデカルト思想が時代と如何に格闘し受容されていったのかを伝える興味深いドキュメントである。
