昭和16年、日米の建艦競争が激しくなる中、海軍は八五〇〇トン級軽巡洋艦の新造を決定した。基盤となる船体をすべて共通化することで重巡にも使用でき、さらに飛行甲板を施せば改造空母になるものだった。昭和17年5月から、九八式一五センチ砲「超速射砲」を装備した阿賀野型軽巡四隻が建造された。同年6月、ミッドウェー海戦で空母四隻を失った日本海軍は、防空艦として阿賀野型軽巡四隻による第一〇戦隊を編成したのだった。そうした中、米軍とのガダルカナル島の争奪戦が勃発。ラバウルを訪れていた阿賀野型四隻は、急ぎ第八艦隊と共に米軍部隊の撃滅に向かう...。初陣となる第一〇戦隊は、米海軍の攻撃を阻止できるのか!!
