井の頭池やその周辺の歴史をさかのぼると、古来よりヒトの命を支えてきた場所であることが分かります。江戸時代に入ると江戸市中の飲料水となった神田上水の水源として信仰や観光の対象となりました。そして、明治の終わりに公園構想が持ち上がり、大正の初めに渋沢栄一などの重鎮の奔走によって、1917年(大正6年)5月1日に、日本で初めての郊外公園「井の頭恩賜公園」が誕生しました。開園からの100年の歴史は、大正、昭和、平成とその時代の求めに応えながら変遷した歩みとなりました。本書はその日本で初めての郊外公園として誕生した井の頭公園の100年の歩みを写真で紹介するものです。
