Parchman Prison Prayer - Another Mississippi Sunday Morning

The opening song is a heavy blues by several a capella singers, with an impressive deep tenor humming. The deep, heavy, and sad sound, reminiscent of old field hurrahs (labor songs) and Negro spirituals, overwhelms the listener from the very beginning of the song. The album also includes a haunting church organ and soulful sermon ( 3 ), and an original hip-hop song ( 4 ) with improvised voice percussion and lyrics such as "the Holy Spirit dances like an MC Hammer". Compared to the previous album, which featured piano playing, delicate beauty, and a haunting sense of the transience of human life, this album is very robust and soulful. 悪名高きミシシッピ州立刑務所: 通称 ＜パーチマン・ファーム＞の囚人たちによるゴスペル歌唱のフィールド・レコーディング作品続編!!! 2024年初頭、ブレナンはパーチマンへと再び足を運び、前回同様、オーバーダブなしの100%ライヴ・レコーディング (ファースト・テイクのみ)を行った。今回のセッションについては、看守/牧師は同席せず。なんとブレナンと囚人たちのみで行われた。参加者として23～74歳までの12名の男性囚人たちが集められたが、うち3名は終身刑を言い渡されている。本作は、伝統的なゴスペル/ディープ・ブルース/ラップ/ヒップホップなどをベースとした骨太な楽曲で構成。前作からの参加者の中には、このレコーディング・セッションのためにオリジナル・ソングを事前準備していた人も現れるなど、前回にも増して意欲や熱意、そして物怖じしない姿勢がダイレクトに伝わってくる内容となっている。冒頭は深いテノールのハミングが印象的な、複数人のア・カペラによるヘヴィーなブルース。古のフィールド・ハラー (労働歌)やニグロ・スピリチュアルを彷彿とさせる、深く、重く、物悲しい響きに、歌い始め一発で圧倒される。この他、チャーチ・オルガンとソウルフルな説教が心を打つ (3)、即興によるヴォイス・パーカッションに"聖霊がMCハマーのように踊る"といった旨のリリックがのせられた独創的なヒップホップ (4)なども収録。ピアノの弾き語りはじめ、繊細美や人の命のはかなさが心に染みるような前作と比較すると、今回の作品は非常に逞しくソウルフル。ディープでヘヴィーなブラック・ルーツ・ミュージックの香りが非常に濃厚。特にフィールド・ハラーやスピリチュアル、ディープ・ブルース・ファンの方には強力におすすめしたい一枚。是非ご期待ください!!!
