Denzel Washington makes a fantastic departure from his usual good-guy roles in Training Day. What makes the actor great is that when he does something, he goes all the way, and here he plays the baddest, nastiest narcotics cop in film history. Ethan Hawke is quite good in his own right, playing straight man to Washington's mad genius. Director Antoine Fuqua ("The Replacement Killers," and the underappreciated "Bait") provides continuous tension throughout the film, and even injects some wild humour into the material. Denzel Washington won the Best Actor Oscar for this role, but I feel it was more of an award representing the culmination of all the great acting he's been delivering this past decade (e.g. "The Hurricane," "Malcolm X," etc.) all of which deserved an Academy Award.
