『クレヨンしんちゃん 嵐を呼ぶ モーレツ! オトナ帝国の逆襲』『河童のクゥと夏休み』の原恵一監督、実写初監督作品! 加瀬亮、田中裕子、ユースケ・サンタマリア、濱田岳ら実力派キャスト競演! 木下惠介生誕100年記念映画。激動の戦中。映画を愛し続けた名監督の挫折と再生を描く、愛と感動の実話。――時は戦中。映画界に政府から戦意高揚の国策映画づくりが要求された時代。木下惠介が昭和19年に監督した『陸軍』は、その役割を果たしていないとして当局から睨まれ、次の映画の製作を中止にさせられてしまう。夢を失った木下は松竹に辞表を提出、病気で倒れた母、たまが療養している浜松市の気賀に向かう。失意の中、たまに「これからは木下惠介から本名の木下正吉に戻る」と告げる惠介。戦局はいよいよ悪化の一途をたどり、気賀も安心の場所ではなくなる。惠介は、山間の気田に疎開することを決め、その夏、一台のリヤカーに寝たままの母を、もう一台には身の回り品を乗せ、兄と、頼んだ「便利屋さん」と自分の3人で、夜中の12時に気賀を出発し山越えをする。17時間歩き通し、激しい雨の中リヤカーを引く3人。ようやく見つけた宿で、母の顔の泥をぬぐう惠介。疎開先に落ち着いて数日後、たまは不自由な体で惠介に手紙を書く。そこにはたどたどしい字で「また、木下惠介の映画が観たい」と書かれていた。
