Plot: Yamada (Kenichi Matsuyama) finds a job at a small salted fish factory in a small town in Hokuriku, and starts living in an old cheap apartment called "Heights Mukolitta" introduced to him by the boss. Having come to the apartment nearly penniless, Yamada's little pleasures are a glass of cold milk after taking a bath and freshly cooked white rice. One day, Shimada (Tsuyoshi Muro), the resident of the next room, comes in to ask to use the bathroom, and Yamada's quiet life changes completely. Yamada had hoped to live quietly and not get involved with other people as much as possible, but she gets involved with the residents of Heights Mukolitta, including Minami (Hikari Mitsushima), a landlord whose husband has died, and Mizoguchi (Hidetaka Yoshioka), who lives with his son and sells tombstones.... Surrounded by the brazen but warm-hearted residents of the apartment, Yamada's heart gradually begins to loosen.
