The story is intended to be a metaphor for the feelings of "children who are bullied" by depicting the feelings of "Firefly," who is different from others, and to help children understand the feelings and position of "children who are bullied" by making them imagine their own hearts. The theme song is by Yumi Matsutoya and the animation was produced by Mushi Productions.

いじめ問題の深刻化により「いじめをなくす童話」として話題となっている作品。問合せ殺到につきDVD化決定!! "いじめ問題"に真正面から取り組んだ作品であり、いじめをなくす為に製作された唯一のアニメ作品。富山県の小学校教師であった小沢昭巳氏が、"いじめをなくそう"と思い、学級新聞にホタルの童話を書いたのが始まり。物語の内容そのものにいじめを示すような内容は登場しない。あくまでも「他とは違うホタル」の心情を描く事で「いじめられる子ども」の心情を暗喩させ、その心をイメージさせて自らが「いじめられる子ども」の気持ちや立場を理解できるようになることを目的とした物語として制作されている。主題歌は松任谷由実、アニメーション制作は虫プロダクション。
