This album is a landmark in the Japanese death metal scene in 1991, and can be said to be the first death metal album of its kind. SURROUNDED BY FOES" (1990: P.M.A001), the first release on P.M.A RECORDS, was released only on cassette at the time, and this is the first CD release.

ROSEROSE自らが立ち上げたレーベルから初のCDリリースとなった『BRUTALIZE』 (1991年)は、YACHI (G)が加入しツイン・ギター体制になり、デスメタル・サウンドへとシフトチェンジして初のフルレンス・アルバム。1991年当時の日本のシーンにおいてはまさに画期的なサウンドで、間違いなく最初期のデスメタル作品といえるであろう歴史的な重要作。また記念すべきP.M.A RECORDS初のリリースとなった『SURROUNDED BY FOES』 (1990年: P.M.A001)は、当時カセットのみでリリースされており今回が初CD化となる作品。
