江口イラストの原点は〈マンガの扉絵〉! 江口寿史のイラストの原点は〈マンガの扉絵〉だった! 鴨川つばめ『マカロニほうれん荘』の扉絵に衝撃を受け、1979年創刊の雑誌「イラストレーション」では湯村輝彦、鈴木英人、永井博、林静一といったイラストレーターたちを知った江口寿史は、毎回マンガの扉絵で、本編とはまったく関係のない絵を描いて、イラストの描き方を試していたという。カラーを使わずにトーンの差で表現する。トーンを使わずに線だけで描く。筆で木版風に。スクリーントーンで眼鏡の影を表わす、などなどを実験をしていたのだ。マンガで初めてカラートーンを使ったのも江口寿史。ただ、まずは扉絵を描いてテンションを上げてから、ネームを描くという感じになっていったということから、本編が二、三ページで終わってる回もあったそうだが……。本書は、『すすめ!!パイレーツ』『ストップ!!ひばりくん!』『「エイジ」』をはじめ、『パパリンコ物語』『ラッキーストライク』『イレギュラー』までの、ほぼすべての作品の扉絵を大集成し、江口寿史の「絵の歴史」が一望できるイラストレーション集である。
