This stunning new brush by Chikuhodo is a collaboration between artist Hideki Kimura and Yamanaka Makie. The handle features Kimura's carp motif embossed in gold and colors on the handle. Enjoy the soft and smooth touch of bristles made 100% of the finest gray squirrel.
Beautiful, colorful maki-e on Yamanaka lacquerware, a traditional craft of Ishikawa Prefecture. Makie: a unique Japanese art and craft where patterns are applied in lacquer on the surface of a lacquered object. Before the lacquer dries, metallic powders in gold, silver, and other colors are sprinkled and set on the surface of the object. During the Momoyama period (A.D.1573-1615), objects decorated with maki-e made their way to Europe's nobility and royalty via missionaries who had visited Japan. Large volumes of maki-e were exported. It is this colorful maki-e that has been applied to the handles of these brushes by craftsmen using printing techniques. Although this shape of brush head isn't my preference (it has a flatter side, more oval), it falls in line with the other Chikuhodo Makie brushes. So, I knew what to expect and I am still very happy with my purchase! It makes a great finishing powder brush. It's not very dense, so the application will be sheer. The design is exquisite! It's even more beautiful in person. It's like having a peice of useable art, and for that alone it was already worth getting to me.
