時は江戸。幕府によって表現者たちが自由を奪われていた時代に、画を描き続けた一人の絵師がいた。"あの波"を生み出した葛飾北斎である。本作は、葛飾北斎の挫折と栄光を、歴史的資料を調べ上げ、事実を繋ぎ合わせて生まれたオリジナル・ストーリー! 北斎の青年期を柳楽優弥、老年期を田中泯が演じ、W主演でそれぞれの北斎を体現する。阿部寛はじめ、永山瑛太・玉木宏など、豪華キャスト陣が集結! ――腕はいいが、食うことすらままならない生活を送っていた北斎に、ある日、人気浮世絵版元(プロデューサー)蔦屋重三郎が目を付ける。しかし絵を描くことの本質を捉えられていない北斎はなかなか重三郎から認められない。さらには歌麿や写楽などライバル達にも完璧に打ちのめされ、先を越されてしまう。"俺はなぜ絵を描いているんだ? 何を描きたいんだ?" もがき苦しみ、生死の境まで行き着き、大自然の中で気づいた本当の自分らしさ。北斎は重三郎の後押しによって、遂に唯一無二の独創性を手にするのであった。ある日、北斎は戯作者・柳亭種彦に運命的な出会いを果たす・・・
