This album is probably an acquired taste, but once you "get it", it's a joy to listen to. Perfect companion for those gloomy, rainy days. But don't get me wrong, in no way is the music depressing, simply dark in a beautiful way. The production emphasizes atmosphere a lot and the songs quickly draw you into Sakurai's world where he ponders what it means to live and to die. Heavy themes for a heavy album! I was not really in the mood for anything this dark when I first listened, but the music definitely won me over. I hope a lot of people will give The Mortal a chance.

I was thrilled to hear that they had formed this band project and bought the limited edition of this album on pre-order, and sadly, the disc is most likely going to be collecting dust. I don't like it at all. Beautiful photography- absolutely stunning. High quality pre-order bonus poster too. Strange studio engineering. Unpleasant gurgling filter effects on vocals and certain tracks obscuring performances. It's very experimental. Listening closely, each musician's performance is crafted individually to sound as if a ghost/spirit were performing, haunting the instruments. When layered, it's intensely dissonant. None of the artists influences are bands that I will listen to, so the genre/style underpinnings of this work already had the deck stacked against their favor with me. Tragic... I've been dreaming of Sakurai doing another solo/side project again for years.
