In the U.S., the film was unfairly X-rated by the MPAA, resulting in a dispute between the filmmakers and the MPAA, and a major uproar involving many independent filmmakers in the fight for freedom of expression. Director John McNaughton made his Hollywood debut with this film, which was recognized by director Martin Scorsese. Michael Rooker, who plays the lead role, made his film debut with this film. This is an extraordinary film that presents a new dimension in the expression of "cinema," a film that describes the true darkness of America in an unaffected manner. The real-life Henry Lee Lucas is said to be one of the models for Hannibal Lecter.
