Jake Shimabukuro's "Dragon", in my opinion, is his strongest piece of work to date. His previous releases are all great and showcase Jake's versatility as an instrumentalist. With "Dragon", Jake takes his chops and songwriting skills to a new level. This also marks Jake's debut as a producer and the result is nothing short of excellent. Jake wastes no time in this CD when it comes to shredding. The opening track "Shake it up" starts with amazing tremolo picking ala Eddie Van Halen and goes into a latin/rock feel. The title track features Jake using tapping techniques to extend chords that create a sophisticated and haunting melody. "3rd Stream" is another song which features Jake's amazing fast picking technique but more in the vein of Al DiMeola or Yngwie Malmsteen. "2 B Organic" is a gem of a ballad which appears only on the Japanese release of "Dragon". "Me and Shirley T" is a cheerful and inspired upbeat piece. The rest of the CD is equally mesmerizing.
