The 1951 film "Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji)" directed by Kozaburo Yoshimura comes out on DVD for the first time. It won the award for best cinematography at the Cannes Film Festival in 1952. Based on the classic novel by Murasaki Shikibu, written over 1000 years ago. Supervised by Junichiro Tanizaki and Kikan Ikeda.

映画『源氏物語-千年の謎-」(2011年12月10日公開)公開記念リリース! カンヌ国際映画祭で撮影賞を受賞し、数ある「源氏物語」の映画化の中でも評価の高い1作がついに初DVD化!! 当時の日本映画においては空前の規模で製作を敢行。主演級の衣裳60組は高島屋の全面協力によって調達。花の宴のシーンの三十人の女官の衣裳代だけで、総予算をオーバーしたというゴージャスさが話題になった。吉村公三郎監督は「源氏物語は反逆精神に貫かれ、批評精神とリアリストの目で描かれた」と新しい解釈をした。新藤兼人による脚本を、谷崎潤一郎・池田亀鑑両氏が監修。美術監督に水谷浩、音楽監督に伊福部昭。長谷川一夫、木暮実千代、京マチ子、乙羽信子、他出演。
