1977年に公開され、第1回日本アカデミー賞を総なめにした日本を代表するロードムービー『幸福の黄色いハンカチ』をリメイクしたTVドラマ (日本テレビ系 10月10日 よる9時～11時18分放送)。 北海道。網走刑務所。今、1人の男が出所しようとしていた。門で看守に深々と礼をして外に向けて歩き出す男・・・島勇作。迎えに来ている者は誰もいない。あてがあるのかないのか、1人歩いて行く。彼の表情には、出所して自由になったという晴れ晴れとしたものはなく、何か、迷いと恐れのようなものがある。翌日。同じく北海道の日本海沿いの道路を、1台のバスが北上している。そのバスには、1人の若者・花田欽也が乗っていた。欽也は稚内のホテルにアルバイトの面接を受けに行く予定だったが、その途中、港でじっと海を見ている島勇作と出会う。さらに、昼食を食べに入った店で、店の娘・小川朱美と知り合い、三人は行動を共にすることに。やがて勇作は、欽也と朱美に自分の過去を打ち明ける。そして2人は、勇作が「まだ自分を待っていてくれるなら、黄色いハンカチを竿の上にあげておいてくれ」と別れた妻に伝えていることを知る・・・。
