Among all 31 works in the outlaw period drama masterpiece "Hissatsu" series, "Hissatsu Shio Kinin" stands out as one of the most popular. The latest HD remastered version produced by scanning all 26 episodes, in a permanent preservation edition of 6 Blu-ray discs, is finally released for the first time on Blu-ray. In the Edo period, execution by law was called "Shioki" (punishment). However, the "Shiokinin" referred to here are dark executioners who punish evildoers that escape the law. There are no surviving records or ancient documents proving their existence. Unlike the previous work "Hissatsu Shikakenin" based on the novel by Shotaro Ikenami, this second installment of the Hissatsu series was produced from an original script and is regarded as the masterpiece of the series. The original character settings and story development became the prototype for later works. The popular character Nakamura Mondo, a constable of Minami Machi Magistrate's Office played by Makoto Fujita, makes his first appearance, along with Tetsu the Bone-Setting Monk (played by Tsutomu Yamazaki), Joe the Coffin (played by Masaya Oki), Okin the female pickpocket (played by Yumiko Nogawa), and Hanji the Town Crier (played by Masaaki Tsusaka). Together they punish villains to avenge the grudges of their clients. Their punishments are not merely assassinations but sometimes involve inflicting slow suffering to let the wrongdoers taste the victims' pain. As a pioneer of special effect killing techniques, the famous "Bone Dislocation" move by Tetsu, which breaks the opponent's spine or throat with his fingers, became a hot topic for using X-ray footage. The powerful visual beauty of light and shadow, as well as the high quality of the scripts and direction, are still praised today.
