裸女の死体を彩る鮮血の浮世絵!怪異を追って佐七の十手が閃く! 江戸で人気の画家・空来山人は、昔の仲間である茨木屋鵬斎の宴席で狂乱して川に身を投げて悲惨な最期を遂げる。自分が描いた風流六歌仙をそのモデルである六美人―春太夫・采女・蝶雨・小扇・お駒・花奴-たちに散々に罵られたことが原因とみられた。一年後、町中に奇妙な噂が広まる。一人息子・世之介と茶屋の娘・お京の縁組を嫌った茨木屋が、嫁にと目論む勘定奉行の娘・菊姫を屋形船に招き、六歌仙の美女たちの背に似顔絵を刺青させてその似顔絵を鳩につけて飛ばし、それを七日目に持参した者へ賞金を出すというのだ。そんなある夜、六美人のひとり小扇が殺される。死体に突き立てられた短刀には蝶雨の似顔絵が刺し留められていた。その数日後、蝶雨が惨殺される。かくして八百八町きっての目明し人形佐七が事件の解決に乗り出す。
