["東映・ザ・定番 "シリーズ 第20弾] 1925年アラスカ、伝染病で苦しむ子供たちに犬ゾリのリーダーとなって血清を届けたオオカミ犬と人間との固い友情の実話が世界中で話題となり、一大センセーションを巻き起こした。本作品は、その実話をもとに作家・戸川幸夫が児童文学として書き上げた原作を映画化したものである。映画の舞台は、数少ないオオカミの棲息地・シベリア。日ソ精鋭スタッフ130名が結集し、20世紀最後の未知の世界といわれた極寒の地にカメラを持ち込んだロケーションは、零下50度の寒さとの闘いの中、日本では味わえない雄大な自然を捉えることに成功。さらに、極地の神秘であるオーロラをも完璧に再現している。監督は、「イタズ」で動物と人間の愛情を見事に描いた後藤俊夫。ペレストロイカによって旧ソ連映画界は大きく変化し、旧ソ連側からも「ジプシーは空に消える」のウロンスキー・セルゲイ監督補佐、タルコフスキー作品の美術監督アローニン・ウラジミールなど、モスフィルムを支えるスタッフが参加。キャストは、役所広司、桜田淳子に加え、アンドレイ・ポルトネフ、マリーナ・ズージナ、ニキータ・ミハルコフらが出演している。文部省選定作品。
