[高倉健生誕90周年記念] 酷寒の地、北海道・網走刑務所で、一つの手錠で結ばれた二人の囚人。貧農の家を飛び出し、やくざの世界に足を踏み入れて傷害事件で服役中の任侠やくざ・橘真一と、強盗、強姦、殺人未遂、前科五犯のしたたか者・権田権三である。雑居房でも二人はことある事に反発しあうが、そんな折、橘は権田らの脱獄計画に巻き込まれる。追っ手の銃弾が炸裂する中、手錠という腐れ縁で繋がった橘と権田。二人は、果てしなく続く大雪原を突き進んでゆく・・・。雄大な北海道の大自然を背景に、アクション作品に定評のある石井輝男監督が、好漢・高倉健を主演にむかえ長年温めてきた題材を遂にスクリーンに叩きつけた傑作である。渋みのある演技陣が男たちのドラマを繰り広げ、スケールの大きなサスペンスドラマを盛り立てるなか、高倉健が歌う哀愁に満ちた主題歌が切なく響くシリーズ第1弾。
