Blu-ray&DVD完全版としてリリース! 大ヒットアニメ「なぜ生きる」シリーズ第2弾。石坂浩二演じる親鸞聖人、増田俊樹演じる唯円をはじめ、細谷佳正演じる壮賢、本泉莉奈演じるアサ、市来光弘演じる権八、三木眞一郎演じる慧信房、白井悠介演じる燈念、伊藤健太郎演じる明法房らが、声優として出演。――鎌倉時代、1200年代前半。貧しい農家に生まれながらも賢く利発な平次郎は、ある日、親鸞聖人と出会い、多くを学び成長していく。やがて京に戻った親鸞聖人を追って故郷を離れた平次郎は、「唯円」という名を授かり、仲間たちとともに親鸞聖人のもとで仏教を学ぶ。そんな中、かつての友人が苦境に立たされていると知った唯円は、なにもできない自分への無力感にとらわれ苦悩する。なぜ、善人よりも悪人が救われるのか? 人は、なぜ生きるのか? 「すべての人間が悪人であり、救われるために条件はない」という親鸞聖人の言葉の真意が、解き明かされていく――。
