ULTIMATE ANIME THEME COLLECTION - PART 2!
So you think you have it all? Hah! Nippon Columbia has released another 3-volume library of songs from the Golden Age of anime, 1963 - 1978. The unifying motif once again are anime series that started life as manga. But wait! Aren't these the same shows? Yes, but these are the "B-sides" to the original releases. It's another collector's dream (or financial nightmare) come true. Come on, you know you've got to have them! Each disc is again packed with 70 minutes of music, and the 36 to 44-page booklets are fully illustrated with color art.
IT'S TWINS!
CURTAIN CALL
On Wednesday, February 8th, an era in Japanese film music ended. Akira Ifukube, who is most famous for his work on "Godzilla," and other Toho monster movies, died of multiple organ failure at a hospital in Tokyo at the age of 91. Born in Kushiro, Hokkaido, and a graduate of their university, he self-taught himself composing. Despite warnings from his peers that film music would ruin his classical career, Ifukube proved them wrong, and brought international recognition to contemporary Japanese music, as well as the rhythms of his Ainu heritage. His orchestral composition, "Nihon Kyoshikyoku" (Japanese Rhapsody), has been called a masterpiece. Ifukube was awarded a Person of Cultural Merit; one of Japan's highest honors, in 2003.
