This is a homage to "King Lear". Tatsuya Nakadai is an old warlord who retires and divides his realm between his two oldest sons. His youngest son is banished for telling him some painful truths. The eldest son's wife stirs up trouble, and there is war in the family. That son is killed in his brother's plots, and the woman masters his brother. The old man is besieged, and all of his men are slain. He wanders away crazy with only his clown to attend him. The youngest son learns what is afoot and comes to rescue the father who banished him. He married the daughter of a powerful daimyo, so he has a big army. There is quite an epic battle. At the end, the old man's senses unmercifully return, and he sees that all of his sons are dead, and another man is in possession of his lands.
