What really makes the The Twelve Kingdoms stand out is its animation. Its highly realistic style is befitting of its serious tone. Vibrant colours and beautiful shadings accentuate moods. The animation flows smoothly while retaining its very artistic style. Definitely not your typical animation, it provides a refreshing change for the audience. An orchestral masterpiece of epic proportions, the opening theme (Juunigenmukyoku) aptly reflecs the entire culture and feel of the anime. The background music leaves more to be desired but overall the quality of the music is commendable. But soon, fantasy turns into nightmare. Welcome to realism. This time, the girl from the other world though is a "chosen one", does not have a bevy of handsome guys to back her up and protect her. The wimp turns into a real fighter, skilled with the sword, fighting off gigantic monsters from off the prehistoric ages. Romance can take a back seat for the time being. Survival is the key. A nice mix of action, drama and excitement makes it appealing to both females and males. A great watch for any anime fan!
