愛を捨てた男と、愛を諦めた女。函館の一瞬の夏を舞台に、二つの魂が邂逅する。 何度も芥川賞候補に挙げられながらも賞に恵まれず、41歳で自ら命を絶った不遇の作家・佐藤泰志。短い函館の夏を舞台に、生きる目的を見失った男と愛を諦めた女との出会い、そして底辺で生きる家族を慈しむような眼差しで描き、唯一の長編小説にして最高傑作と言われる「そこのみにて光輝く」の、発刊から24年を経ての待望の映画化。主演は綾野剛。「脚本を3行読んだだけで、出演を決めた」と語り、ノーメイクで生(なま)の芝居にこだわり抜いた話題作。監督は『オカンの嫁入り』で新藤兼人賞を受賞し高い評価を得てきた呉美保。モントリオール世界映画祭コンペティション部門正式出品作品。――ある出来事がきっかけに仕事を辞め、目的もなく毎日を過ごしていた佐藤達夫(綾野剛)は、ある日パチンコ屋で使い捨てライターをあげたことをきっかけに、粗暴だが人なつこい青年・大城拓児(菅田将暉)と知り合う。拓児に誘われるままについていくと、そこは取り残されたように存在している一軒のバラックだった。そこで達夫は拓児の姉・千夏(池脇千鶴)と出会う。互いに心惹かれ、二人は距離を縮めていくが、千夏は家族を支えるため、達夫の想像以上に過酷な日常を生きていた。それでも、千夏への一途な愛を貫こうとする達夫。達夫のまっすぐな想いに揺れ動かされる千夏。千夏の魂にふれたことから、達夫の現実が静かに色づきはじめ、達夫は失いかけていたこの世界への希求を取り戻していく。そんなとき、ある事件が起こる――。
