Wild Horses Rock SteadyJohnny HammondRenditionsYou can't go wrong with any of Johnny Hammond's Kudu/CTI releases. Hammond's distinctive touch just feels drenched in sweat and makes me want to shimmy. Billy Cobham's drums always blow me away when I direct my focus to them (the guitars on these albums also blow me away --Eric Gale handles more of the guitar duties on the Kudu/CTI releases that bookend this one, here there's an impressive roster); the rendition of the Rolling Stones' Wild Horses found on this album will give the uninitiated a sense of what I'm talking about.

Larry Young's FuelLarry YoungFunky hard groovesThis is a striking jazz funk album that is super funky, with a more experimental funk sound. Hard grooves, female vocals with plenty of vocables, electric organs and synths, hard grooves. Did I mention hard grooves? The transformation from Blue Note in the 60s to this makes it almost unfathomable it's the same artist. As with my review of Unity I find myself wondering why I don't hear Larry Young's name mentioned more often.
