Warren Zevon [SHM-CD] [Low-priced Reissue]Warren ZevonWhat a debut!Warren Zevon's debut in 1976 impressed everyone. The songs were great, Jackson Browne's production was powerful and the musicians were people like David Lindley. With the shm-format this music invites us to get even closer to what was happening in the recording studio. This is West Coast music at its best.

Blonde on BlondeBob DylanBest Blonde On BlondeI have been searching for the best stereo version of Bob Dylan's classic from 1966. This is it! That's the great thing about CDjapan. They take good care of older editions of music. It's nice and very easy to go treasure hunting on their site. I do it often...

The Next Step Band Live at Smalls 1996Kurt RosenwinkelHighly recommendedThis extraordinary recording foreshadows Rosenwinkel’s now legendary fourth album The Next Step, released in 2001. A recording will never quite catch the drama of a truly great live performance, but Next Step Band Live at Smalls 1996 gets about as close to that dramatic fire as you could hope for. Both dyed-in-the-wool Rosenwinkel aficionados and those new to his work will appreciate an engaging and enveloping set that transports the listener back to a particular time for jazz in New York and to a legendary club on a Tuesday night – for what was clearly a magical evening.

Hitorigoto [Blu-spec CD2]Paul SimonTimeless PaulThis is where Paul makes all the right musical decisions. Like so many others he took the plane down to Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Alabama. The musicians there are unique. They always play for the songs and they make PS feel so comfortable. I used to have the vinyl when it was released. Thanks to CDjapan I now have the best ever version of this classic.

David Gilmour [Blu-spec CD2] [Cardboard Sleeve (mini LP)] [Limited Release]David GilmourA very good solo albumIt's a very well balanced and a very cohesive work. "David Gilmour" is, in my humble opinion, an album that, despite remaining in the area of Pink Floyd's music, also explores other musical areas but only if they were very close to that area. So, "David Gilmour" is a very good album and if you like the inimitable guitar sound of David Gilmour, especially on Pink Floyd's album "Animals", the resemblance is obvious, you mustn't miss this album, for any kind of reason. It should please Pink Floyd's fans. It boasts strong songs, great guitar work and Gilmour's ever-charming vocals.

Universal SyncopationsMiroslav VitousA master!!Freedom reigns supreme on Universal Syncopations, bassist Miroslav Vitous’ 2003 release. For his first disc in seven years, he assembled a dream team of pianist Chick Corea, drummer Jack DeJohnette, saxophonist Jan Garbarek, and guitarist John McLaughlin. He provided the musicians with maps that infused the sessions with an open and expansive mindset. The maps contained the tunes’ harmonies, melodies, and motifs. The rest was left open to interpretation.

Universal Syncopations 2Miroslav VitousWarmly recommended!A quintessentially ECM aesthetic is very much at work on this solid effort. This is an ambitious project and deserves repeated listening in order to fully appreciate all the work that Vitous has invested in making this album.

Some Girls [SHM-CD] [Priced-Down Reissue]The Rolling StonesPrime StonesThis album from the Rolling Stones still amazes. The year was 1978 and very few had the same musical attitude and the same creativity when it came to cover art. The enclosed lyrics are a big bonus if you want to dig deeper into what Mick Jagger is actually singing about...

On Every Street [SHM-CD]Dire StraitsSouthern StraitsWe all have our favourite album by The Dire Straits. This is mine. Why? Because this is where the musical influences from the American South shines through. I hear Memphis, Nashville and New Orleans in Mark Knopfler's songwriting and production. More of the same came with Mark's soloalbums. Great stuff!

An Old-fashioned Christmas [Limited Release]The CarpentersIn Tune With The Christmas SpiritI have a small collection of Christmasrelated music. No more than a dozen discs that the family enjoys each december. This is my second Carpenters Christmas. The songs are wonderfully arranged and performed. The sound is excellent and everything that Karen Carpenter sings is magical. Trust me.

The Cars Greatest Hits [SHM-CD]The CarsSuperb Pop!The Cars gave us a handfull of excellent and experimental pop music. This anthology actually succeeds in gathering most of the highlights from the individual albums. They don't make pop music like this anymore...don't let it pass you by.

Anthology of Bread [SHM-CD]BreadThe Best BreadMany discoveries can be made in reissue series featuring the shm-format. That's where I found a comprehensive anthology on Bread. This particilar Bread is no more but so many if their songs have that timeless quality. The sound of Bread is great!

8-tracks [Limited Edition]Pink FloydNice Japan releaseThe Pink Floyd 8-Tracks compilation album is a concise, 8-track anthology curated by producer Steven Wilson. While largely criticized by long-time fans as a corporate release following the catalog sale to Sony, it features excellent mastering and the official release of the rare Animals 8-track version of "Pigs on the Wing".
