The Purple Album [w/ DVD, Limited Edition]WHITESNAKESolid, But Get the Gold Edition
This album is incredible; it’s great hearing these songs reimagined by this line up of Snake, especially since I’m a big Beach and Aldridge fan. I would just say to pick up the gold edition as it includes extra tracks.

Shaped by FireAs I Lay DyingMid-Tier AILD
I really wanted to love this album - the band’s first after Tim’s release - but I merely like it. It’s the more modern, more melodic but less screamy and heavy AILD. My Own Grave and the title track are standouts, but fans of this incarnation of AILD should just buy Through Storms Ahead instead

London Astoria 1992 [Limited Release]BadlandsFantastic Live Recording
So, the first show’s live recording in Astoria is fantastic - I’m a huge Jake fan, and this definitely scratches that itch. I mean, they all sound fantastic which is amazing given the band wasn’t a very cohesive unit at the time. The second show’s recoding, however, is very rough but again, you’re really only buying this release for the Astoria live show

San Antonio 1986 [Limited Edition]BLACK SABBATHSolid Live Album of the 80s Era
This is an extremely good live recording of this line up of Sabbath, with Ray sounding fantastic and doing justice to Ozzy, Dio and Glenn’s tracks (which is basically an impossible feat). The Live AID tracks are a nice edition but aren’t great.

Parabellum [Blu-spec CD]Yngwie MalmsteenRelentless Fury!
I have YM’s first 5 albums on SHM-CD - I think they were the very first CDs I purchased from CDJapan - and don’t listen to much else; these albums ARE my childhood. However, when I heard Relentless Fury with YM SINGING leads, my jaw dropped. His voice is great and fits the music perfectly. The music is standard fair for YM, but this is why we love him

UltrapowerStrikerSilly BUT Catchy
Striker is a silly 80s callback band, but they know exactly what they’re doing: they possess great musicianship and these songs are really well executed. Best of the Best of the Best and Ready for Anything are both heavy in my playlists. Highly recommended for fans of 80s and 80s throwbacks

A-ZA-ZDecent, But Not There Yet
I’m a huge fan of Fates Warning, especially their late 80s to mid 90s output, so II was all in for the Zonder & Adler band. And while the musicianship is undeniable, the songs just aren’t there for me. No tracks really stand out except Trial By Fire. That said, their SECOND album is AWESOME

A War You Cannot WinALL THAT REMAINSOne of those Weird ATR Releases
ATR hit a point in their career where they started including both heavier metalcore AND commercially-accessible heavy rock on their albums. It would have been nice if they stuck to one genre - or similar ones - on their albums because the result is an uneven listening experience. And this album is especially uneven. That said, Asking Too Much and What If I Was Nothing are some of their best lighter songs and tracks light Shadow and Bind Me are solid heavier songs.

Kill 'Em All (Remastered) [SHM-CD]MetallicaThe Definitive Version
KEA is a milestone album for me; one of my favorites of all time. And this SHM-CD sounds better than any CD version I’ve heard to date. I can hear everything, there is solid sound separation and it’s CRISP. This is a must buy for all fans of Metal.

Load (Remastered Deluxe) [SHM-CD]MetallicaFinally the Proper Outlaw Torn
This album sounds fantastic, and offers a few legitimately great Metrics songs, including Bleeding Ne, Until It Sleeps and the PROPER cut of The Outlaw Torn, which is absolutely better in this form. The demos and live tracks are great as well. Definitely a must buy if you don’t want to get the box set.

BorderlandAmorphisAmorphis Still Going Strong!
Amorphis have been around for a long time and Borderland is their 15th studio album since the 1992 debut. Evolving from old school brutal death metal, the band have over time developed a more sophisticated sound. Borderland is the 9th album with 'new' singer Tomi Joutsen. He breathed new life into the band when he joined and is still delivering a strong performances. The right mix of clean singing and more rough growls and his impeccable timing for the right mix of both style. What is slightly different on this album from the previous three? New producer and given the album a more smoother sound, but the songs are definitely more polished and keyboard driven, this is due to the majority of the songs written by keyboardist Santeri Kallio. The songs are pretty much what you'd expect from Amorphis if you are familiar with their sound and recent albums. Even with the slightly less-aggressive sound, there is plenty of heavy sound, guitar riffs and brutal vocals to satisfy fans of the band from all era's. I've given it 4/5, while it's not quite up to the standard of more recent albums like 'Queen Of Time' and 'Beyond The Red Cloud' it's not far off. Plus some of the songs may remind you of older tunes, but that is now the bands style and there are a few variations to keep listeners interested. The exclusive Japan bonus track is a throw back to a purer heavier death metal sound and an ultra rare song written by drummer Jan Rechberger. If your already a fan of this band, then you won't be disappointed, if new to Amorphis then you will enjoyed some heavy melodic progressive tinged metal that will have you banging your heard and tapping your foot.

The Purple Tour Live [CD+Blu-ray]WhitesnakeAmazing Live Album, but
Look - this live Snake album is incredible. Coverdale, Beach, Hoekstra and Aldridge are just next level on this recording. But the thing is this: you might as well get the Gold edition since it is the most comprehensive release of this music to date

Behind Silence And Solitude
All That RemainsBehind Silence And SolitudeAll That RemainsA Solid Metalcore DebutI can’t compare this remastered reissue to the original, but I must say this effort is a strong debut for ATR. Like almost all artists starting out, this is their least commercial effort where the screaming dominates, but the sings still hit. And you can hear there are better things coming down the pipeline. Definitely recommended

This Darkend Heart
All That RemainsThis Darkend HeartAll That RemainsStrong Sophomore EffortATR sophomore effort is again produced by the amazing Adam D, and features a bit more singing and better composition than their debut. “This Darkened Heart" and "Tattered on My Sleeve" are standouts for me, but this is all a precursor to what will be their masterpiece in their NEXT album …
