CDJapan : Is "Attack on Titan" S2 worth watchin'? [Tea Break with Shion]

Today we're talking about the comeback of "Attack on Titan" as the 2 second season is finally back on air after four long years of waiting. How does it compare to the first season? What should I expect going into the second season? with very very light spoilers, lemme give you a preview based on the original manga.

Have to say that I was a little worried about the 2nd season having read the manga. S1 was a great run because outside of its high production value, excellent directing, voice acting, music score, and sakuga; the pacing of the show is what drove it home. This is largely due to the first part of the original work being action heavy with the well-crafted characters and plotlines creating high stakes for these action scenes to have a sense of urgency and importance.

At the point where S1 cuts off, however, the pacing of the manga has become somewhat a lackluster, at least for me. Regular appearances of the Titan Shifters, the new additions to an already huge cast of characters and a politics-heavy storyline that scattered off these characters into different plot points have all contributed to a somewhat dragged arc. Things do pick up a little bit eventually, but I am not very optimistic that they will get to the "better parts" of the manga over a 12 episode span.

All in all, I do recommend watching the 2nd season, given that you've already watched the first season. Unveiling the overarching secrets of the world of "Attack on Titan" demands a great amount of commitment, and S2 seems to be a necessary evil in order for a story exhausted of an action-heavy plot to develop. But I also completely understand if four years of waiting has worn out the patience for an arc not so "exciting". In that case, my suggestion would be to wait for either the manga or the anime to complete its course, before jumping in again.
