Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal! In the late 70's, Punk Rock and New Wave were quickly gaining grounds as the dominant forces in the mainstream British rock music scene. However, in the underground, there were defiant youngsters who watched in horror how the ground was eroding fast as these new forces were shoving aside music they loved, and demeaning stereotype that Hard Rock was "Old Wave" music was being propagated. So, they stood up. They stood up and shouted in rage. So began the movement, and there was a very simple, and yet a compelling urge underlying it, which was essentially to take up arms of their own and to play it themselves if that's what it takes to listen to music they love. In early stages of the struggle, the underground movement was dispersed in ebbs and trickles that ran through small garages, but the passion and the sense of purpose driving the movement were steadfast and strong.. So, it was not too long before the movement gathered forces to form an enormous torrent. And finally, they broke on through to the mainstream, winning back the grounds that have been lost. So, this is the rise of the NWOBHM, the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal! Countless bands were active in different parts of the country. In London, there were Iron Maiden, Saxon, and Angel Witch. In Newcastle, there were Tygers Of Pan Tang, Raven, and Venom. Def Leppard was in Sheffield and Holocaust was in Edinburgh. Everything seemed to be against them, as they only had small amount of resources, but the unbridled enthusiasm to stand up on their own to make a difference was inspiring. Soon, the movement spread its reach and influence globally, and lay a foundation for new styles of metal including LA Metal and Thrash Metal. Thirty years since the movement of NWOBHM began, the spirit and heritage lives on. Listen to TRIVIUM, Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold, Arch Enemy, and Dragonforce and for instance, and you will be overwhelmed with the same urge to stand up against the bland, simple-minded stereotypes oppressing the world.
